Conservationist and government commissioned founder of the Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF) Tom van ‘t Hof has written a new guide titled Hiking on Saba, A guide to the trails of Saba. The new guide to Saba’s extensive trail network was launched during a book signing at Tropics Café at Juliana’s Hotel in Windwardside on July 14.
Van ‘t Hof retired in 2009 and vowed to only do things he wanted to do — such as writing a guide to Saba’s network of trails. The guide is an introduction to Saba’s trails and provides information about what one needs to know before going on a hike, and about Saba’s climate, geological history, vegetation and wildlife. Of course the guide also includes trail descriptions.
The 18 hiking trails vary considerably in length, degree of difficulty, vegetation and landscape. The guide is a great help to get the most out of hikes in Saba.
The guide was well received at the book signing during which Island Governor Jonathan Johnson spoke a few words. SCF said it is very happy to have this new guide. There was a high demand for an updated trail guide, and this one now also includes sections about Saba’s flora and fauna. SCF will be selling Hiking on Saba at the Trail Shop, the Marine Park office, and at other shops on the island.
