Self-defense class for special needs students

On April 2, 2017, the special needs students from teacher Helen’s class enjoyed the Jiu-Jitsu class in the Peter L. Granger Sports Auditorium in St.John’s. The class was given by instructors from Renzo Gracie, JIU-JITSU, St.Maarten.

This was the first time that the students experienced any type of self-defense manoeuvres. They had a great time and learned a lot. They showed off their uniforms. The students received a medal for participating.

Teacher  Helen contacted the head instructor of SMX Jiu-Jitsu, Melissa Bardfield, a year ago about these classes and the possibly of coming to Saba to teach her special needs students. She was thrilled to give the opportunity along with Black Belt, Mr. Hugo Mayer-Lima, and Blue Belt, Ms.Allison Deher.

Thank you to the school, the Lions Club, Mr & Mrs. Wolfgang, and an anonymous supporter without whom none of this would have been possible. Because of their charitable donations all hotel and airfares were covered. Thank you to the instructors, students, parents, and teachers for showing their support.

Let’s keep on spreading the autism awareness, the understanding, and acceptance.
